GrusLås
GrusLås soil stabilization technology has been successfully used
on 1,000+ sites worldwide to significantly improve paved and unpaved roads,
trails, construction areas, parking lots, and other soil and aggregate surfaces.
GrusLås improves the performance of existing soil and aggregate
to reduce reliance on imported material as well significantly
improving unbound aggregate course layers in
engineered roadways.
Why GrusLås?
A Cost-Effective Alternative to a Traditional Unbound Aggregate Course
Using GrusLås with materials that meet strict roadway design criteria (such as NPRA) for knustfjell in the “unbound aggregate course” offers several distinct structural, environmental, and financial advantages. GrusLås modifies this course from a completely “unbound” state to a bound, semi-flexible, and water-proofed matrix. The specific benefits of using GrusLås include:
Enhanced Resistance to Freeze-Thaw Degradation. The GrusLås coats the Knustfjell particles and cross-links during curing, turning a highly permeable unbound layer into a water-resistant barrier. This eliminates “free water” accumulation that can cause frost heaving and subsequent spring thaw collapses.
Major Base Layer Thickness Reduction. A GrusLås-stabilized base creates a continuous, high-tensile polymerized connection, increasing its load-bearing capacity exponentially. It reduces the required structural thickness of the stabilized base by at least half compared to a standard unbound course while achieving the identical pavement life expectancy.
Lowering Carbon Footprint and Material Logistics. Halving the thickness of the aggregate course means hauling ~50% less aggregate to the jobsite (lowers fuel consumption and construction-phase CO2 emissions).
Mitigation of Fatigue and Reflective Cracking. Rigid chemical stabilizers like cement increase the base layer stiffness; whereas GrusLås introduces flexible resilience, elasticity, and energy absorption. The treated unbound course withstands subgrade settling and heavy traffic deflection without cracking, significantly extending the fatigue life of the overlying asphalt wearing course.
A Cost-Effective Alternative to Asphalt and Concrete
GrusLås can also provide a substantially lower-cost solution for roads, work areas, and other suitable surfaces, where an engineered road or where conventional asphalt or concrete construction are too costly. It also significantly reduces dust generated by gravel and dirt roads.
Simplified Construction
GrusLås can be incorporated using conventional grading, mixing, and compaction equipment, reducing the number of materials and construction operations required.
How GrusLås works
GrusLås is mixed with the existing soil or unbound aggregate base materials. The treated material is then compacted to create a stronger, more durable stabilized layer that is allowed to cure. Our process improves the performance of the “existing/native” soil or the “unbound aggregate base course” materials.

DOCUMENTATION & ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE
GrusLås has undergone the documentation and chemical compliance work required in the United States and Norway and has been used in many countries in North and Central America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Supporting safety, chemical, and environmental documentation is available for review.
Additional project-specific testing and engineering evaluation can be carried out where required.
PROJECTS & PARTNERSHIPS
GrusLås is currently specified for projects at Doheny State Beach Park, Anaheim Park, and Point Mugu, California; Maui, Hawaii; Garnet Ghost Town, Montana; NASA Stennis Space Center, Mississippi; Vancouver, British Columbia; and Isfjorden, Norway.
We work with contractors, public utilities, municipalities, developers, road associations, landowners, and infrastructure stakeholders to assess soil conditions and project requirements to develop custom GrusLås applications.
